A written estimate

Ask for a written estimate before work starts, and ask the shop to contact you for approval before doing any work the estimate does not cover. Ask too whether it will return the parts it replaces.

Certification and warranty

Ask whether the technicians who will work on your car hold certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, an independent body that tests and certifies automotive service professionals, and what warranty covers the parts and the labor.
