How do I choose an estate planning lawyer?
Ask how often the firm prepares plans like the one you have in mind, how it charges, and which lawyer will advise you and prepare your documents. Ask, too, whether an initial consultation is free. Estate planning covers many kinds of work, from wills and trusts to powers of attorney and the administration of an estate after a death. Ask how often the firm handles work like yours.
How the firm charges
Ask for the fee agreement in writing, and read it before you sign. Ask whether the firm charges a flat fee or bills by the hour, what the fee covers, what later changes to your documents would cost, and whether an initial consultation is free.
Who prepares your documents
Ask which lawyer will advise you and prepare your documents, how the signing will be arranged, and how you will be kept informed. Ask, too, how quickly the firm returns calls and messages.
