How do I choose a plastic surgeon?
Ask who will perform the procedure, which board certified the surgeon, where the procedure would take place, and what the full cost would be. A rating says how reviewers felt about a visit, not whether a surgeon or a procedure is right for you. Questions to ask before you book:
Who will perform the procedure
Ask whether the surgeon you consult with will perform the procedure, how often they perform it, and which board certified them. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is one of the member boards listed by the American Board of Medical Specialties, and its website lets you check whether a surgeon is certified by that board. In Illinois a physician’s license can be checked with the license lookup on the website of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Where it takes place
Ask where the procedure would be performed, who would give the anesthesia, and what recovery and follow-up visits would involve. If a treatment would be given in a medical spa, ask who would perform it and who supervises it.
The full cost
Ask for the full cost in writing before you agree to anything, including the surgeon, the facility, anesthesia and follow-up care, and whether any part of it could be billed to insurance.
